Here are some of the chapter books that I plan to read-aloud to my class the first half of this year. Read-alouds are one of my favorite times of the day, and I think, no I know, my students agree! They beg and plead me to continue most days, though I'll admit I'm a bit evil and love to leave them at cliffhangers. I try to pick several different genres to read from so that the kids get an understanding of each, also I love books that are part of a series because the kids want to keep reading the other books in that series!
Niagra Falls, or Does It?
This is the first in the Hank Zipzer series by none other than "The Fonz" - Henry Winkler. It's about a 4th grade boy at the beginning of the year, who has some learning difficulties and gets into some zany situations with his friends along the way.
Franny K. Stein, Mad Scientist
These are quick, short reads that have the kids howling with laughter! They're a good way to introduce science-fiction and I can usually read one in 2-3 days. Sometimes I'll read one book, othertimes two in a row depending on my mood and that of the class.
Because of Mr. Terupt
This is one of my favorite read-alouds of the year, and one that I ALWAYS make sure to get to, usually around October-November. I wait until a few months into school because I want the students to know each other and their quirks before starting this story. Because of Mr. Terupt is told from the perspetive of 7 students, throughout 5th grade, each with a stereotype that defines them. Yet, their teacher Mr. Terupt believes in each of them and is able to help them overcome their problems, without being too hokey or perfect about it. Great story, great message, always a hit!
Stay tuned for Part 2: Read-alouds for the second half of the year.
I read 3 books for read alouds throughout the year. I usually start with Maze of Bones, the first book in the 39 clues series. Plenty of cliffhangers to end on and I want to get them hooked on a series because I never read aloud book 2! Then I give them a choice, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH or The One and Only Ivan. Both are Newbury books and fabulous reads.
ReplyDeleteI have the 39 clues stories in my classroom, but I've never actually read one! I am the same way about series' books, I'll never read the future ones, but the kids practically have a death match to see who gets the next one! I love the One and Only Ivan, it is a great book!
